Honey Bees...Craft and Cookies

Today, Nathan was a buzzy bee.

he made a bee hive, some bees and honey cookies.

I totally love how this craft came out....

To make it this craft you will need

white poster board
bubble wrap
yellowish gold paint
gold glitter
a ribbon to hang it with
fishing line
yellow and black pipe cleaners
small google eyes
white paper
glue

For the first part of the project

Cut the poster board in half and draw a honey hive, you need two of these, because you are making a mobile to hang.

Next pour some of the paint onto a paper plate and use the bubble wrap to press honeycombs onto the hive

then take the glitter and sprinkle it on the paint...the paint will act like glue and the glitter will stick to it.

For the next step...the bumble bees.

take one yellow and one black pipe cleaner and twirl them around on your finger to make a little bee.

once you make your body, glue the google eyes and some small paper wings to it.

for more on how to make the bees (or other fun activities)...see the tutorial on education.com.

Next, we took some fishing line and tied some to the bees.

We then taped the other end of the line to the back of the hive.

we glued both sides of the hive together and used a hole punch to make a hole to hang it with.

We read the following books about bees...

World of Insects: Honey Bees
Bees by Deirdre A. Prischmann
Look Inside a Beehive by Megan Cooley Peterson

And then we finished off the day by baking some Honey Cookies.

Honey Sugar Cookies

1/2 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup honey
1/4 cup sugar
1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/8 tsp. salt
1 cup sugar (for rolling)

Preheat oven to 300. Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
In a mixing bowl combine flour, soda, and salt.
Cream together the butter and sugar. Add the honey and cream well.
Slowly add the flour mixture and mix until just incorporated. Finish by hand if needed. Do not over mix the dough.
Chill dough for 10 minutes.
Drop dough by rounded spoonfuls into bowl of sugar and roll to coat. Place on prepared baking sheet and bake for 15-18 minutes until edged are golden and set.
Allow to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to rack to cool completely.

Nathan had never really tried honey before...

he wasn't really impressed

but he did enjoy eating the cookies though.

Hope you had a "honey" of a day...we sure did ;)
