Caterpillar Craft Day

I meant to do this yesterday, but I wasn't feeling very well
ended up with a stomach bug
how a propos, considering we are doing 'bug week', eh?
LOL!

We made these two caterpillar crafts

for the first craft

we used toilet paper and paper towel holders cut into small sections that we painted fun colors

after they dried, we used a hole punch to punch holes on each side (except for the head and end, which only got one side punched)

and we tied string to each one to form a 'train'

they glued google eyes to the head and punched two small holes for the antennae

cute little caterpillar to play with

For the next project the boys painted lids to pop bottles several different colors

and yes, this was quite the messy craft...

we cut some green construction paper into the shape of a leaf

the boys glued their lids to it in the shape of a caterpillar and we drew antennae and eyes onto it.

I printed out some fun bug worksheets for Nathan to do from All Kids Network.com

We had so much fun this week and we still have more bugs to go through, so next week we will continue with bugs, before moving onto other fun themes.

Hope you are enjoying the summer so far and all the kids crafty fun!

Beetle Bug Craft

Today the boys made some fun beetle bugs.

We were inspired by the book

The Very Clumsy Click Beetle
by Eric Carle

to make these beetle bugs, you will need:
styrofoam balls cut in half
various paints
glue
 various colored pipe cleaners
google eyes

cut the balls in half and paint them in fun colors and designs

make sure to leave a humongous mess for mom to clean up while you wait for the paint to dry

here comes the really fun part...

making your beetles all kinds of awesome by gluing eyes and pipe cleaners on them

these beetles are too cute to be creepy.

I wish all bugs could be pink and purple, then maybe I wouldn't be so freaked out by them ;)

Ants & Worms

The boys have really gotten into Club Mom

Every day, they eagerly wait for craft time, this morning they had to wait a bit longer than they would have liked because it was library day.  Nathan had his reading session this morning and the library served lunch.  They serve lunch every day in the summer, so we figured since we were already there we might as well join them.  The boys ate their lunch among friends and stacks of books.

Later this afternoon, Nicholas had his turn.  Nick was apprehensive about doing it this year, but when I picked him up, he was all smiles and really glad he went.

Mission Accomplished!

Today's books were

Ace Lacewing Bug Detective
by David Biedryzycki

and

Diary of a Worm
by Doreen Cronin

Both books were super cute.

Then they made Dirt Cups

I'm sure everyone knows what dirt cups are, but just in case you've been living under a rock like a bug...I'll share the recipe for you.

You will need the following

clear plastic cups
2 cups of cold milk
1 box instant chocolate pudding
1 container Cool Whip
1 pkg Oreos; crushed
gummy worms

Mix the pudding according to package directions and set aside for about 5 minutes.  Stir in the cool whip and about 1/2 of the oreos.  Scoop a few small spoonfuls of the crushed oreos into the cups, next add the pudding mixture, followed by another spoonful of crushed oreos and garnish with gummy worms.  refrigerate for at least a half hour before serving.

enjoy

While we waited for the dirt cups to chill, the boys made these super adorable ants

You will need:

1 pinchy clothespin painted black
some black pipe cleaners
google eyes
three black buttons
glue
scissors (to cut the pipe cleaners)

Paint the clothes pin black and set it aside to dry

take one pipe cleaner and cut it down into three or four sections

using one small section thread the pipe cleaner through the button holes and make an antennae

glue google eyes to the same button

thread the other three smaller sections through the clothespin and glue them in place (legs)

glue the three buttons to the top of the pin with the 'head' button on the 'pinchy' side of the clothespin

and walahhhh

such a cute, fun craft!

we are loving our buggy adventures....and hope you are too!

Fireflies....

we haven't seen any fireflies yet...but i'm sure they will show up soon.

catching fireflies is quintessential summertime fun.

the boys made their very own fireflies today.

for this craft you will need the following:

a 20 oz green plastic soda bottle, empty and clean, label removed.
one glow stick
three green pipe cleaners (for the legs)
one silver or gold pipe cleaner (for the antennae)
yellow paint for the eyes
black and yellow construction paper
glue
scissors
black paint

first paint the lid black

next take the green pipe cleaners and wrap them around the pop bottle and tie them for the legs

then cut the yellow sheet of paper down to size, covering the top part of the 'body' leaving the legs exposed.

cut wings using the black construction paper and glue those on top of the yellow paper

next wrap the gold or silver pipe cleaner around the neck of the bottle to make antennae

break the glow stick so that it glows and stick it inside the bottle

screw the lid on the bottle and paint eyes using the yellow paint (we used neon yellow)

then check out your handy work by going into a dark room

fun fun fun!!!

we were inspired by the book

the very lonely firefly by eric carle

the boys also painted some fireflies

neither one of them can wait for tomorrow's project....they both asked if they could do more than one bug a day...I think I would call that a successful day, wouldn't you?
